5 Ways to Elevate your Diwali Interior Decoration

The Festival of Lights is around the corner, preparations are in full swing and the blessings are on its way. Getting your house ready to welcome guests with warmth is compulsory. With very little planning and just by following these guides you will be able to bring your Deepavali decorations to a new level.

Another Diwali, another new sight! Let’s try:

A New Coat of Exquisite Paint

According to Jill Connor in her blog “This Old House”, “Color is used to help define interiors and create focal points in relatively featureless rooms. The trick, of course, is figuring out how to pick paint colors to use and where to put them.

Consider a new color for your walls and furniture to let your guests enjoy a fresh atmosphere. Plain color that matches well with your interior would make a huge difference or try out the textured wall paint for the added characters and details to your space.

  • Pick the new color based on objects or arts in your house; throw pillows or rangoli. This allows you to have a statement piece in your space.
  • To not let the furniture overshadow the background (photo frames, heirloom pieces such as vinyl records, or piano) opt for a neutral color. The center focus would be on the precious objects and the furniture would complement it well.

Few tips to play around with paints:

  • If you have a furbaby that loves to scratch – prime the legs of your furniture multiple times.
  • Choose the color based on how you want the room to feel cool colors for the soothing effect and warm colors to liven up a space.
  • Do not rush when choosing the perfect colors.

Add Photo Frames

“Aw sayang, you still have this photo of us?”

Imagine the conversations that could be started with your loved ones by just having photos hanging or put around the living area. Photo frames take you through memory lane and it could also add aesthetic appeal to your house.

There are wooden frames, metallic frames, or digital photo frames. Consider how these materials would help you make the space around it look nice.

Try out frames with patterns to create a bold look and basic shape for a more subtle effect. Gallery walls are also a good idea to make your house looks sophisticated.

Incorporate Mirrors

We always recommend going for the largest mirror you can afford to make the most of every ray of light from your mirror’s reflection”
– Lucy St George

A mirror is an all-around amazing design feature, it gives the space interest while increasing the lights and magnifying the sense of space. Make the narrow area in your house look spacier. A large artwork or a lot of photo frames might overpower the room but a large mirror will be sure to make a room feel bigger and brighter.

Check out these mirrors:

  • Peranakan antique mirror
  • Rattan mirror
  • Anglo carved Indian mirror
  • A simple long stand mirror

These mirrors would also be great to be put near the entrance of your house so the guests could touch up their appearances before heading out.

New Arrangements of Furniture

You love the house you are living in, but after some time, you feel jaded looking at the same thing every Diwali. Try rearranging your furniture! Usually, it takes a complex way for an interior designer to do it, floor planning, drawings, and all to get the best result.

Do it yourself, here's how:

  • Read our designs with purpose – the importance of spatial relationships.
Use the information to visualize how a certain space could be used to its best and ponder upon how you can optimize the practicality in the space.
  • Empty out the room
Leave the pieces that are decided to stay, it should be purposeful, the rest of the small stuff should be removed.
  • Work on one focal point
After seeing how the room looks without the other things, you can now choose one corner of the room that could be used to imagine visuals. A large window or an accent wall would do. From that, you can start arranging how you want it to complement each other.
  • Start the new layout
Put back the furniture taken out and arrange according to the new plan. New arrangements, with improved space functionality.

Interview Dialogue with Abby Yahaya, Malaysian Art Illustrator

A 23 years old girl with a cheerful personality and an outstanding talent, Abby Yahaya. She shared her journey with Studio Pandan in exploring her deep passion for arts illustrating.
Abby Yahaya-01

#1 What was your very first job ever - getting serious with your current business?

My very first project was for my mom’s friend, where I designed a Happy Birthday canvas illustration for her and now that I have practiced digital illustrations, I started receiving gigs to design packagings, postcards and posters for local brands.

#2 Tell us about your journey into the art industry; when did you realize that you could turn your love for art into a career?

Remeniscing back to my high school days, I really love creating cute notes and doodles of the things I study, I print them out for my friends to enjoy and learn. A thought came up, I wonder if this passion of mine could be pursued into something useful for other people. I spent my time practicing by drawing everything manually, my pencils and I we go against the world! After some time, I managed to send my drawings to art competitions and consistently posting in on social media for the purpose of sharing, this is how the audience started noticing me and I gained clients, I was hired for my illustrations multiple times and I am convinced I could help them in the best way possible especially for their brands and designs. Eventually, I finally managed to turn my hobby into a growing career, till this present day.
Abby Yahaya-04

#3 If you could go back in time and give your young artist self one piece of advice, what would it be?

I would like to thank my younger self for not giving up on this journey although I’m growing slowly as I am still a student, I grow at my own pace and I managed to spend more time on my passion.

#4 Where do you find the most inspiration for your work?

Mostly, I gained inspiration from animated movies like Coco, Klaus, Encanto, Ghibli, and even local series like Upin and Ipin. I like seeing how the animation works, the environment, the colors and the feels that the artist worked for.
Abby Yahaya-02

#5 What does your creative process look like?

Prior to working on a project, I like to see inspiration from other artists besides learning and understanding the client’s theme and direction. I’ll come out with sketches, studies about the theme and the color palette which highlights my art style and the client’s branding so that we both have our own personal touch for the final artwork.

#6 What was the most significant design or business challenge that you have encountered and grown from?

The most significant work that I learned a lot from is probably the one for MissLilyShop! I had to design 4 illustrations for their New Year’s collection which are a clothing tag, calendar, booklet and Thank you card! I had so much fun working on it because I just love their brand direction which suits well with my art style.

#7 What has been your biggest achievement? When was the last time you thought, “wow, I can’t believe I just accomplished that!”

The highlight of my design is the latest work I produced for children’s book illustrations published by UMT. It is a bit challenging to control the art style and colors that would attract children’s eyes. The publisher of UMT just launched “Che Bee and The Colony” which was illustrated by me and I’m so honored to have my artwork in children’s book!
Abby Yahaya-03

#8 Which upcoming project or endeavour are you most excited for?

My upcoming project is the one I am working on currently Daily Doa book by one of our local authors! It is so exciting as this is the second book that I’m working on and can’t wait to see the outcome!
Studio Pandan is excited to see more and more artists and creators being recognized, check out Abby’s work on Instagram @fleorettes ,if you have a suggestion let us know who else we should interview in the comment down below!

How to Avoid Renovation Mistakes

Do you feel insecure when you are about to pay a sum of money and not sure what it will turn out to be? Or you want to reduce and eliminate mistakes as much as possible?
How to Avoid Renovation Mistakes-02
A. Mistake no 1. that is commonly found in renovation is not having a contractor or a professional to do site measurement before ordering built-ins or customised fittings. It is important to have a pair of trained eyes to do the measurements because they would know which critical dimensions that they needed using their instruments and how they are taken to achieve an accurate number. With those, they would have a different set of calculations in ordering the materials as well as doing some alterations to the fittings subject to site conditions.
How to Avoid Renovation Mistakes-03
B. Mistake no 2 that is commonly found in a renovation site is that not spending that extra 15 minutes on prepping the floor and wall surfaces with canvas sheets that can save an hour worth of cleaning stubborn stains. And you do not need 1 but 2 layers of canvas to do its job. Ensure that the perimeter is secured with a good quality masking tape otherwise the canvas sheets could form layers of fold and one might slip over it.

C. Mistakes no 3. in a renovation work is not allocating additional days for site work. Why? Contractor may say, my workers are on MC, will not be able to work today. Delay a day’s work. Or ‘’Ah Moi, hari ni tak pi kerja, tayar lori pancit.’’ There goes another day deferred. So, here is a tip. If contractor says he will take 7 days to complete, high chances is, the team will take between 8-21 days to complete the project.

So, there you go, these are the 3 common mistakes in renovation work. If you are in need of assistance in your interior renovation, reach us at Get in Touch – Studio Pandan. How to Make Your Kitchen More Efficient

When was the last time you had to search your wine bottle opener and made everyone waited for you? Or do you find the kitchen workflow isn’t right, but you do not know where to start?
How to Make Your Kitchen More Efficient-02
A. My tip no 1 is to de-clutter the worktop and pantry. Less stuff, less stress. It’s not only the physical space that you free up to prep your time-savers, but also the mental space because physical clutter can be mentally draining, by taking that away can make all the difference. If you have limited space, try asking, ‘’ Do you need to use the blender every day?’’ Is it still safe to consume? How can I group this to make it more functional and eye-pleasing? With a clear space comes with a clear mind, get rid of the clutter and enjoy your culinary experience with the people who matter.

B. Tip no 2 is to have an organised storage system. A good storage system not only requires low maintenance to look presentable, but also prevents wastage and reduces time to spend cleaning and organizing. And this is my personal favourite part: it helps to boost your self-confidence. It is the feeling of being empowered when they are thought out intentionally and systematically creates a hidden beneficial advantage to your health and relationships.

C. My last tip to make your kitchen more efficient is to place an absorbent kitchen floor mat at the basin area. Not only this prevents slips and falls. This could also avoid dirty footprints and hence, reducing the number of mopping the floor 😉
How to Make Your Kitchen More Efficient-01

Tips on interior design of a child’s room

When it comes to designing a child’s room, safety is always on the top of our list. We want to create a safe environment for the kids to play and explore. We also want to avoid any hazards that could hurt them.
Tips on interior design of a child’s room-02
Safety is paramount in any home, but it’s even more important when you have children. Children can be curious and reckless, which means that they need to be in a safe environment at all times. When designing a child’s room, there are a few things you need to consider. So how do you ensure that your child’s room is safe? Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Even if it is just for a few minutes, children need a safe space where they can play and explore without worrying about being hurt by sharp edges or electrical cords. When it comes to lighting, opt for a soft, diffuse light source that will not hurt your child’s eyes. Installing the correct lighting is essential, as it will allow them to see without hurting their eyes. Don’t forget about night lamps. Pick one that has soft diffusers on it so it will be easier for your child’s eyes and they won’t be afraid of sleeping at night with the night lamps on.
Tips on interior design of a child’s room-03
All switch points should also be covered with a protective pin so their small fingers won’t touch electrical items by accident.

Installing window latches and blinds that are safe for children is another important step. Strangle hazards happen when they play around with string on blinds or window latches, so make sure these things are properly covered and/or removed from their reach.

Rugs in the room must come with anti-slip stoppers so they don’t slip while playing on them. Avoid installing sharp edges on furniture and chest of drawers in their rooms, as these can cause injuries if they fall on them or against them accidentally.
Tips on interior design of a child’s room-04
When you’re designing a child’s room, it is important to remember that kids are not little adults—they have different needs and tastes. The next step is to create zones that are specially designed for them. For example, you can create a playing toys zone, an art craft zone, and even a sleeping-in zone where they can learn responsibility since they are young. It is also important to get furniture that fits your child’s size—it makes them more comfortable, which helps with their physical development and wellbeing.

You can also request to paint the walls with paint that is washable and free from VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which is better for the environment and safer for your child if they happen to ingest some.

You have made it to the end and that is great! We have shown you how to make your child’s room a dream come true. You are clearly a person who appreciates beautiful things and the effort that goes into creating them. Interview With Dina Aldrin, Malaysian Jewelry Maker

Penang Island, the lovely state in Malaysia does not just allow the beauty of the nature there to be enjoyed by others, it is also a place where the talented jewelry maker, Dina Aldrin is based. Studio Pandan had a lovely time chatting with her talking about so much, especially the creative sides, let’s see what she has to say!
MALAYSIAN JEWELRY MAKER-01

#1. What was your first job ever?

I didn’t have permanent work nor did I ever apply for one yet. However, I did make a business out of my makeup service. I did freelancing for a while because again, this is also something I enjoy doing. I love making people feel the best and most confident. I did not charge too much as I was still learning and it was self-taught. I learned to do makeup through youtube videos when I was 9 and now I’m 22. I did makeup services for events like prom, weddings, graduation, and so on. I’m still currently doing it.
MALAYSIAN JEWELRY MAKER-02

#2 Tell us about your journey into the art industry; when did you realize that you could turn your love for art into a career?

My journey starts off natural as I have always been surrounded by people that love art. I myself love art. It empowers me. It makes me feel the most confidence whenever I wear a piece of jewelry that is handmade. I would always stop by at the booths by the road or even in stores. I grew up in Penang Island and every weekend there are always pop-up markets I would attend to. I find myself so excited and intrigued when I see all the details on handmade products. Be it, shirts, pants, purses, and so on. I would always buy with no hesitation. I continued my studies in Melaka and then again, I would be so excited to go to Jonker street every now and then to go for trinkets shopping. I knew it is something I love and will forever be passionate about hence I started to learn how to make my own and turn it into a business for fun. Turns out a lot of people love the things I made which fueled me to keep doing what I love. Even if I didn’t do a business out of my passion I would still love doing it. I never cared about the money or how much I make. I just love doing what I’m doing. I love giving handmade things or to be specific pieces of jewelry to my close family and friends. I appreciate handmade products from the locals even more now because I know how much time and effort is being put into one single product. Hence why I would always support local products. They put a lot of care and thoughts into everything they do.

#3 If you could go back in time and give your young artist self-one piece of advice, what would it be?

If I could give my young artist self one piece of advice, I would say to don’t worry about what the result is going to turn like. Just do it, if you lose, just remember you had learned the most valuable lesson.

#4 Where do you find the most inspiration for your work?

I think I’m a sentimental person and I take the most inspiration for my work from my childhood memories apart from of course the current trends and contents from Pinterest. However, I would always stick true to my identity and always create things that resemble me. I love producing something genuine and new. Aside from that I am most influenced by my dad in terms of creativity because he is a very creative person and I’ve been exposed to his color palettes a lot when he is doing interior design. I think that also helps in my creative process.

#5 What does your creative process look like?

My creative process depends on my mood of the day. If I’m feeling happy, I would definitely put on some high-beat music and start creating based on what I’m feeling on that day and slowly start from there. Sometimes my creative process is not all rainbows and butterflies, I get blank too but I will never force myself because then, the result won’t turn out the way I want it to be. So, I’ll just go with the flow and create whenever I come out with great ideas.
MALAYSIAN JEWELRY MAKER-03

#6 What was the most significant design or business challenge that you have encountered and grown from?

I encounter some challenges and I have to admit that I would always think too much to be perfect which disrupts my workflow. I’m still working on this one but I’m slowly accepting to allow myself to make mistakes too.

#7 What has been your biggest achievement? When was the last time you thought, “wow, I can’t believe I just accomplished that!”

My biggest achievement is actually people loving my handmade trinkets and coming back to repurchase them. I am also over the roof whenever people ask me to create whatever trinkets are personalized for them without showing the process. I sometimes question myself “how could a stranger totally trust my work and want me to create something for them”. I’m very honored and humbled that people want me to create a surprise trinket for them. I believe myself even more after that. The surprise trinket actually sells better than the others.

#8 Which upcoming project or endeavour are you most excited for?

I’m most excited to collaborate with other artists and create something really nice in the upcoming future!
Studio Pandan is so excited to see more people starting to love handmade local products and always trying to support each other. We had a great time, and we cannot wait for you to meet the next talented person in our next interview! Don’t forget to share this blog with your friends and family, we are pretty sure they will love it!.

The 5 basics of Interior Design in your Home

In essence, interior design is as much an art as it is a science. Thus, making your space efficient and purposeful is equally important to upholding its aesthetic value. Following these simple steps can help you breeze through your home makeover process.
The 5 basics of Interior Design in your Home-02

#1 Function, function, function.

Your personal space must work seamlessly for you. Be it leisure with loved ones or working remotely from home, your environment needs to be a functional aspect to your daily routine. Planning your design project with functionality as the primary focus can ensure that the space is always utilized to maximum efficiency for many generations to come.

#2 Spatial Zoning

Once you’ve figured out your expectations and use for a space, configuring the layout and fittings becomes very systematic. You can now place mechanical structures and electrical outlets to fit your convenience. Keeping your space efficient by placing essential needs within arm’s reach can greatly increase productivity. As an added bonus, you may never have to sort a bunch of messy wires or look for better lighting, allowing you to work and play hassle-free.
The 5 basics of Interior Design in your Home-03

#3 Form

Typically, in terms of design form refers to the synchronicity among elements such as furniture and finishing in a space. Combining elements that work harmoniously with each other such as similar shapes or colour tones can induce warm and welcoming emotion. Highly contrasting elements in a room may induce a disengaging vibe. It is important to take the “form follows function” approach here to ensure that functionality is not compromised for the sake of aesthetic value.
The 5 basics of Interior Design in your Home-04

#4 Interior Styling

Once the form is set, you can finally begin to hunt for all the pretty little things you always wanted to show off at home. The availability of unlimited ornaments, furniture and fittings may lead you to overspend and make bad purchases. It is always best to keep it simple. When you find something you like, consider the space it consumes and how functional it is to you. Some items are gorgeous to look at, but if it serves no salient purpose, you might want to reconsider adding it to your collection

#5 Interior Storage System

The most beautiful of designs can become redundant if clutter is present everywhere. Clutter invokes unpleasant emotions and dissatisfaction with the self. Incorporating smart and efficient storage systems in your design will not only keep your place tidy and neat, but also reduces the time you spend cleaning and organizing. Studies in psychology suggest that a clean and organized space can improve the mental well being in individuals of all ages

# Revitalization (Bonus)

Us humans tend to tire from experiencing the same setting for long periods. Now you have a heavenly space, but it starts to feel rather mundane as time passes. Fret not, you can bring back the excitement with minor changes to the space. Focus on items you can acquire without overspending. Changing fabrics like curtains and pillow covers are a quick and easy way to revitalize a room. If you decide to add furniture or fittings, try and keep it as close as possible to the existing theme. This way you can make sure the room doesn’t just look chic, but functions flawlessly as well.

There you have it, 5 steps to creating the perfect space. Try these expert tips out and experience the benefits of a well-planned design. Share these tips with friends and family, and spread the joy of a beautiful, personalized space.

Listening to your Plants

Now that we are at the end of our plant series, we will consider the ways that we can use to listen to our plants and care for them in a better manner. Without further ado, let’s look into 3 methods that might be used to communicate with your plants.

Growth

One of the most obvious signs that the plant is reaching out is through its growth. It is something that Christopher Griffin, a popular gardener and author, recommends too.

Although the plant may look like it is growing, caution has to be exercised because growth does not necessarily mean that the plant is thriving. These two words have to be looked at respectively from the plant’s point of view because the key is ensuring its happiness.

What better way to know whether the plant is happy or not than to look at its atmosphere.
Listening to your Plants-02

Atmosphere

Plant owners are known to make the fundamental mistake when they are tending to their plants, which is overwatering. Overwatering the plant is equivalent to drowning it, which is something that should be avoided altogether.

It is recommended to wait for 3 – 4 weeks before the plant is moved to a new location. In the meantime, research should also be done on how to improve the plant’s wellbeing, especially on its environment and humidity. Ensuring that your atmosphere matches that of the plant’s needs is of the utmost importance.

The safe bet is to err on the side of caution where the method of testing the soil with your finger should be applied first. Should the soil be exceptionally dry, please immediately water the plant whereas the plant should be left alone if its soil is damp. The reason for this is that underwatering is always a better option because at least the plant can still be salvaged if anything goes south.

The plant’s condition is another key sign that it is need of something.
Listening to your Plants-03

Condition

Checking the leaves of the plant is pertinent too since its health can be determined through their method.

Bright and luscious leaves are indicative of a healthy plant, which means that there is nothing to worry about. Yellow or brittle leaves are indicative that the plant is facing with root rot, a condition that simply means the roots turning into mush and no longer absorbing the nutrition from the soil. Another reason could be the roots wrapping each other and preventing the stem from being healthy.

To remedy situations like this, what is usually recommended is the aeration method in which the roots have adequate airflow. An option would to be use new soil that can be purchased from the local nursery due to its benefits for the plant, for example more moisture and nutrients.

Hope the above three ways would be of help!

This marks the end of the series, but fret not, we’ll be discussing six steps to have a good interior design in your property next week. So, here you go, guys watch this space every Wednesday so that you won’t miss out on any one of our weekly posts. In the meantime, please follow us at @studio_pandan on Instagram to stay updated.

PART 2 : 5 Questions to ask your Main Contractor

#1 What Is Your Workday Like? When Do You Take Lunches?

Knowing the Main Con’’s workday and their employees workday is something that’s very useful for a number of reasons. In addition to the above, you would want to ask:

  1. What are the approximate start and end times for construction day(s)?
  2. Do I need to remove any items that are in or near work areas?
  3. What will the noise and dust level be like?
  4. Do you need me to be home at any point during the day?
  5. Who can I call in case of an emergency?

#2 How Do You Handle Change Orders?

It’s critical that your contractor assures you that he won’t spend a penny over your agreed- upon budget without first gaining your approval — and if you hire him, this should also be specified in your contract.

#3 How Does Your Job Scheduling Work?

Most contractors do their own scheduling, but if the company is big enough, they may have an employee do it, and for this you want to ensure that you are well aware of this schedule and have a copy as well as be CC’d on all emails regarding schedule changes.

#4 Who Is Responsible For Any Mis-calculations?

This is important because it should fall under the responsibility of the person(s) who are taking said measurements.

#5 Do You Project Manage Your Own Projects Or Outsource?

This is important to know WHO will be there at the site managing everything.
